When homeowners explore installing an Invisible Fence® Brand system, a common question is whether the boundary wire must always be buried underground. While most installations involve placing the wire below the surface, there are situations where installing the wire above ground, either temporarily or in certain areas, may be possible.
Wired Invisible Fence® systems create a customized boundary around your yard using a radio signal transmitted through a braided metal wire. With our underground dog fence system, the wire is installed around the perimeter of your property and communicates with your pet’s compatible collar.
As your pet approaches the boundary, the collar provides a warning and, if necessary, a correction to help them learn where the boundary is located. To keep the system “invisible” and protected, the boundary wire is typically buried just a few inches underground around the perimeter of your property.
Although underground installation is the designated installation method, there are some scenarios where our installers may run the wire above ground.
For example, installers may attach the wire to an existing fence, run it along landscaping features, or place it along surfaces where burying the wire is difficult.
Another important factor is climate and ground conditions.
In regions with extreme cold weather, the ground may become frozen and difficult to dig. In these cases, installers may temporarily run the boundary wire above ground so your system can begin working right away.
